Soon Ember could be engulfed by darkness. When Linas granny was young the bulging storerooms were such a splendid sight that schoolchildren were taken on tours of inspection. Lina says that she knows the Builders who wrote it are dead now, but it makes her feel like the Builders are watching over them. It welcomes Ember’s refugees and warns of a several hour climb ahead. It workedbut now the storerooms are almost out of food, crops are blighted, corruption is spreading through the city and worst of allthe lights are failing. A few yards up the path, Doon discovers a framed sign on the wall.

This book definitely keeps you wondering about the past and the future, and with many intriguing parts, I'm going to go with 4/5 stars for City of Ember. Many hundreds of years ago, the city of Ember was created by the Builders to contain everything needed for human survival. Lina and Doon figure out what these words mean to solve the already torn up piece of paper.

Because the letter on how to get out is now some 240 years old, the terminology has changed, it has words that are familiar to us like ‘boat’ or ‘candle’, but not familiar with the people of Ember. Ember was in grave danger.' (6.3) It's thanks to her messenger job that Lina is able to change her mind and start struggling. She understood now that Doon had been speaking the truth on Assignment Day. She is a strong character that looks after her younger sister, Poppy. Suddenly, everyone seems to be just a little bit in danger, and she notes that 'Fear had settled over the city. She makes sure that Lina and Doon solve a puzzle because the pieces of paper have been torn, ripped, and eaten by Poppy.Īnother challenge the Lina and Doon face is terminology. Lina: Lina is the main character in this story. Lina and Doon find a box that has the instructions of how to get out of Ember, but Lina’s baby sister, Poppy makes it hard on them. But after many generations of living in the enclosed, walled city, nobody knows how to get to the outside world. Lina Mayfleet, and her best friend, Doon Harrow try to follow a set of clues left behind by the creators of the City of Ember, known as the builders, to get to the real outside world, where nobody dares to go.īut now they must go outside as the 2 centuries of rations of food and water that lasted an extra 40 years, are now coming to an end. I recommend this book because it is extremely suspenseful and you keep asking yourself 'where is the exit to the city of Ember.' I recommend this book to readers ages 10 to 13 because it is not too difficult but 3rd and 4t graders might not understand the story. Character List Lina Mayfleet One of the novel’s protaganists. I just think that is so funny! I was very excited while reading the book because I couldn't wait to see if they could make it to the new world, but I was very confident that they could. My favorite part of the City of Ember is when they enter the new world because Lina and Doon don't even know what a bird or grass is. Would it be in time before the lights went out forever? This book was unique in my eyes because you get to imagine what it would be like living underground and what it's like in a blackout, when there is darkness all around you. The mayor of the city and his reaction to if power was lost is different from many and has a deeper fear hunger mixed with greed. The city of Ember, beleive it or not, is real Im not talking about the city in the book by Jeanne DuPrau, but the actual city in Burlington, in Europe. When I was reading the book I couldn't put it down and I kept flipping the pages because I kept wondering when and how would the kids get out of Ember. I liked this book because it was so suspenseful. Many tragic things happen, but will Lina and Doon still be able to save the city? Experience the suspense of what they do to get out. Summary: Chapter 14: The Way Out As Ember’s citizens gather for Song Rehearsal Day, Lina wonders if the mayor will enjoy sitting alone in his storeroom once the electricity has gone out. If they don't get out soon, what will happen to the city of Ember? Explore with Lina as she and Doon look for the way out of this chaotic situation. Can you imagine living in a world where the lights can go out any minute and not come back on? Lina Mayfleet and Doon Horrow keep wondering when the lights will go out and, if they do, how will Lina and Doon be able to find the exit.
